Cornflower

The blue that gives a meadow its depth, and its name.

Blue Cornflower Flower

Depth in blue

Cornflower is the annual that gives a young meadow its ceiling. Scarlet poppies down low, cornflower up at the shoulder — the two together read as a meadow before anything else has even flowered.

Specs

type annual, native
height 40–90 cm
flower june – august
soil light, low-nutrient
seed 1.5 g / m² in a mix

Why we sow it

Like the poppy it's a first-season coloniser, but it lingers a little longer into autumn. On thin, chalky soils it can hold the whole colour of the mix by itself.
